PYP Inquire: Can a Balloon Power a Car?

Our Year 5 students set out to answer an exciting question: Can a balloon power a car? The answer was a resounding yes. As part of their science learning, students explored the Law of Conservation of Energy by designing and testing their own balloon-powered cars. With each launch, they observed how stored potential energy in the balloon transformed into kinetic energy, sending their creations racing across the classroom.

Through hands-on experimentation, students experienced how scientific concepts come alive when applied to real-world challenges. The activity encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity while building confidence in problem-solving.

This is learning in action at ARIS—where bold thinking, real-world application, and student confidence drive discovery.
