Cathryn Berger Kaye Service Learning Workshop

Madame Dhalia (CAS Coordinator) and Mr. Brew (Humanities and Social Sciences) took part in the two day Service Learning Workshop given by the international speaker Cathryn Berger Kaye, she is also the author of The Complete Guide to Service Learning: Proven, Practical Ways to Engage Students in Civic Responsibility, Academic Curriculum, & Social Action.

The Service Learning Workshop, held at LCS was described as an insightful two days. Service learning allows students to implement skills at liberty with an extensive benefit on society. It helps to address current issues through research and problem-solving. Students have the opportunity to become better learners as they reflect on work done after activities connected to service learning to help them improve if need be.

Ms. Kaye’s workshops focused on fostering a culture of service, facilitating action and incorporating civic responsibility into the curriculum. Discussions focused on the need for a shift from community service, to the service learning approach which integrates meaningful community service with instruction to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities.
