Out & About - Geological Survey Department And Kweiman

Apr 10, 2015

During the Geological Survey and Kweiman trip, the year 3 learners were given the opportunity to inquire about different rocks, identifying granite by its colour, and collecting information about rock minerals, such as iron ore.

During the session on the formation of clay, learners were taken through how the clay is processed, made into bricks and then baked in kiln at high temperatures. They also had information about other products of clay such as tiles, plates, cups, insulating and bricks, pupils understood how clay is tested for quality in brick production.

The pupils learned that silica is used in producing glass, and that cement is produced by mixing limestone plus clay and other chemicals.

During the visit to Kweiman, learners got information about how clay houses were built by layering clay week after week, so the duration of construction can be determine by the layers. The learners asked questions, finding out that the buildings were built so close to each other as a cultural way of bonding family ties.

After entering the structures, the learners found out that the inside walls are smooth, using cement or clay mixed with sand.
