STUDENT-LED CAMPAIGN ON ‘WOMEN EMPOWERMENT’

Feb 2, 2018

With students around the world being more and more aware of social issues and responsibility, our group of students at the ARIS SRC took the stand to raise awareness on one that engulfs our society at all times. Women Empowerment has become one of the most talked about movements in the world and was the topic of the week.

Our students wanted to highlight the importance of women empowerment in today’s fast paced society. They were divided into their houses - Red House, Blue House, Green House and Yellow House to illustrate stunning pieces of artwork as they made posters and banners to display messages or artwork on women empowerment and gender equality. In efforts to zero down further on how much more aware students of our generation are, they also led a quiz on prominent women figures in different walks of life. To name a few – Marie Curie, Maya Angelou, Helen Keller and many more.

The rules of this activity were three. First, each house member should come out with anything that highlights the importance of women empowerment - anything could be a poem, drawing or anything displaying out-of-the-box creativity. Second, a time limit of 20 minutes to complete their work. Third, a panel of judges going around to chose the best work of the houses, out of which, a winner is yet to be announced. These three rules were of course accompanied by the unspoken rule that is to have fun!

This was a student led initiative executed without any participation by the teachers or the administration. As IB Students, they were caring and reflective of their own learning as they recognized their active role in society to stand up for the right causes and be open minded. It takes courage and a great deal of risk-taking initiative to take a stance on worldwide phenomenons as big as ‘Gender Equality’.

Next week, the house with the most creative work will be awarded with a prize and all of the posters will soon be put up around the school campus.

Stay tuned and stay woke!
