What Floats and What Doesn't?

May 17, 2018

What floats and what doesn’t? In the Arabic and Hindi language classes today, the students learnt about objects that float and objects that sink, by speaking the language.

Both the Arabic and Hindi Facilitators, in each of their classroom, at different points, set up a bucket of water for the activity that they would be taking part in. The students were given various objects like – a spoon, a rock, a coin, a flower, a rubber ball, a paintbrush, paper and so on. They would each take turns and close their eyes as they held two objects in two hands and felt which one was heavier.

They would use either Hindi or Arabic (depending on what class) to identify the objects and form sentences on whether the object sank or floated once they dropped it into the bucket.

Altogether a great exercise to strengthen communication and verbal skills in a language, as well as an activity that gets them to critically think about why and how objects float or sink!
