Early Years Fun with Shapes Week

Oct 2, 2018

This week for the Early Years is an exciting one! The whole week will be “Fun with Shapes” week for the Early Years, from Playgroup until Reception!

This means that every day, from Monday to Friday, students will be doing interactive activities around Shapes! Learning about shapes is a vital Numeracy skill and even a Literacy skill in the Early Years. Through learning about lines and formation of shapes, its sides, and how it looks, it develops children’s understanding about letter formations, through the lines. It also develops the understanding of numbers through categorizations, comparisons, symmetry, geometry and more.

Today, the Reception students worked together collaboratively to form shapes with their friends. They would lie down in a triangle or a rectangle or whichever shape was handed to them. This not only helps them get a better understanding of shapes through a very interactive activity but also helps their communication and collaboration skills!

A second activity they took part in was ‘Sorting the Shapes’ where all the same shapes of different sizes or colors would be sorted together. Circles, no matter how big or small or colorful, would be grouped together, and so would other shapes until everything was sorted. This really strengthens students’ spatial reasoning capacity and also logical reasoning skills!

Stay tuned for more Shapes Activities in the Early Years!
